This quote is significant to Greg's story beause it's a great demonstration of what some individuals around the world struggle with. Like Haji Ali, lots of people don't have the opportunity of having an education and that's why Greg Mortenson decided to do something about the lack of education given to kids, especially girls. He decided to help make a change in the world so kids can have the same advantages he did when he was younger. It also shows the difference between a person like Greg who grew up with many educational opportunities and someone like Haji Ali who cannot even read the words from the Koran. As Haji Ali mentioned in the quote, since he cannot read he doesn't want kids in his town to be like him so with all his power, him and Mortenson were able to build a school together in Korphe.
