3."Once you educate the boys, they tend to leave the villages and go search for work in the cities, but the girls stay home, become leaders in the community, and pass on what they’ve learned. If you really want to change a culture, to empower women, improve basic hygiene and health care, and fight high rates of infant mortality, the answer is to educate girls."

-Greg Mortenson pg.301

Greg noticed that a lot of girls were not getting an education and this made him realize that girls being educated is just as important as boys being educated, maybe even more. Since a lot of families in Pakistan don’t have as much money, once the boys are educated, they leave their villages in search of work in the cities but Greg realized that once you educate a girl, she will stay home and pass on her knowledge to friends and family and become leaders in her community. Once you educate women this improves health care and basic hygiene because they are able to teach others in there community about basic ways on living your everyday life. It doesn’t mean that boys shouldn’t be educated but in Greg’s story he was able to identify reasons why educating girls can help a community grow.
